Podocarpus pollen, on a glass slide, with a piece of window screen over it, photographed through Tom Ogren's microscopeImage information
Description
This is a photo of a glass microscope slide that has Podocarpus pollen on it. This pollen was collected on a slide, placed three feet away from a flowering male Podocarpus shrub. The plant was tapped with a pencil, the pollen was shed, and some was caught on the slide. The slide was then covered with a small piece of window screen, and this was photographed through Tom Ogren's own microscope. What is readily apparent here is this: the window screens we have on our windows, will not stop pollen from passing through them...in fact, the window screens may not even slow down the passage of pollen from Podocarpus. These pollen grains are so small that individual grains can not be seen with the naked eye...but they are nonetheless, allergenic and poisonous. |
